Wix SEO: a step-by-step guide

Wix gets the technical basics right for you, so most of Wix SEO is filling in the right boxes. The hard part is finding them. Here's where each one is.

What does Wix do for you?

Wix makes your sitemap, turns on the secure https:// address for connected domains, and makes every template work on phones. It also has its own SEO setup checklist in the dashboard, which is worth finishing.

Where Wix falls short is control: you can't edit the underlying code, and pages tend to be heavier than a hand-built site, which matters most on mobile. Keep images small and avoid stacking lots of animations and apps on one page.

Which fixes matter most, and where are they?

Work down this list in order. Each step says exactly where the setting is in Wix. Run the free SEO check on your home page first: the report spots that your site runs on Wix and shows these steps under anything that needs fixing.

  1. Make sure Google is allowed to index your pages. Pages menu → ⋯ next to the page → SEO basics: turn on “Let search engines index this page”.
  2. Write a title for every page. In the Editor open the Pages menu, click ⋯ next to the page → SEO basics, and edit the Title tag.
  3. Write a description for every page. In the Editor open the Pages menu, click ⋯ next to the page → SEO basics, and edit the Meta description.
  4. Give each page one main heading. Click the main heading, open its text settings and set the HTML tag to H1. Set other headings to H2.
  5. Describe your images. Click the image → Settings, and fill in “What's in the image? Tell Google”.
  6. Send Google your sitemap. Wix makes /sitemap.xml for you once the site is published on your own domain. Connect Google Search Console from the Wix SEO setup checklist.
  7. Tell Google your business details. Fill in your business info in Settings, then add the code from our schema generator under the page's SEO → Advanced SEO → Structured data markup.
  8. Set how your pages look when shared. Pages menu → ⋯ next to the page → Social share: add an image, title and description.
  9. Let AI search read your site. Dashboard → Marketing & SEO → SEO → Robots.txt editor: remove the lines blocking AI crawlers.

What are the most common Wix mistakes?

  • Staying on the free wixsite.com address – connect your own domain (it needs a paid plan). It looks more trustworthy to customers and to Google.
  • Text inside images – Google and AI assistants can't read words that are part of a picture. Put headings and prices in real text.
  • Pages hidden from search – check each page's SEO basics and make sure indexing is on for the pages that matter.
  • Default titles like “Home | My Site” – write a real title for every page.

What should I do after the basics?

Finish the SEO setup checklist in your Wix dashboard – it connects Google Search Console for you. Then add a page for each main service and ask suppliers or local groups to link to it; the backlink checker shows who links to you now.

Do I need a Wix SEO app?

No. Everything in this guide is built into Wix.
