What does the word counter measure?
- Words and characters, with and without spaces – handy for meta descriptions, ads and social posts with character limits.
- Sentences, paragraphs and reading time (at about 230 words a minute).
- Readability using the Flesch reading-ease score: 60 or above is plain English that most adults read easily.
- Keyword density – the most-used words and two- and three-word phrases, with common words such as "the" and "and" filtered out.
What is a good keyword density?
There isn't one. Google has never published a target and doesn't use a density formula. Use the phrases people search for naturally, especially in your title, first paragraph and headings – and if one phrase is far more frequent than everything else, read the text aloud: if it sounds repetitive, it probably reads as keyword stuffing to Google too.
How many words should a web page have?
As many as it takes to answer the question fully, and no more. A contact page might need 100 words; a service page usually needs 400 or more to cover prices, process, areas and common questions; a guide may need 1,500. The free SEO check counts the words in your page's main content, ignoring menus and footers.
