What are Open Graph tags?

Open Graph is a set of og: meta tags, created by Facebook and now read by LinkedIn, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord, iMessage and most other apps, that tell them which title, description and image to show when someone shares a link. X (Twitter) reads them too, plus its own twitter:card tag, which the generator adds for you.

What size should an Open Graph image be?

1200 × 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) works everywhere. Use PNG or JPG – SVG isn't supported – keep it under about 5 MB, and keep important text away from the edges because some apps crop to a square.

Why isn't my new image showing when I share a link?

Social networks cache link previews, sometimes for weeks. After changing your tags, ask them to look again: Facebook's Sharing Debugger and LinkedIn's Post Inspector both have a "scrape again" option. Also check the image address is a full https:// URL and isn't blocked by robots.txt.

Do Open Graph tags help SEO?

Not directly – Google doesn't rank pages on them. But a clear, attractive preview gets more clicks when your page is shared, and more visitors and mentions help over time. The free SEO check tests your Open Graph tags as part of the snippet section.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need both Open Graph and Twitter tags?

X falls back to Open Graph for the title, description and image, but it needs twitter:card to show a large image. The generator includes both.
