How do I use the sitemap generator?
- Type your website address and press Find pages on my site. We read your existing sitemap and the links on your home page.
- Check the list: remove anything you don't want in Google (thank-you pages, logins, duplicates) and add any pages that are missing.
- Download
sitemap.xmland upload it to the root of your website. - Add
Sitemap: https://yoursite.co.uk/sitemap.xmlto robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
What should a sitemap include?
Only pages you want to appear in search: the final https:// address of each page, with no redirects, errors or noindex pages. lastmod should be the date the page's content last changed – Google uses it when it's accurate and ignores it when it isn't. Google ignores priority and changefreq, so we leave them out.
Does my website builder already make a sitemap?
Very likely. WordPress (since version 5.5), Wix, Squarespace and Shopify all create one automatically – try yoursite.co.uk/sitemap.xml or /wp-sitemap.xml. This generator is for hand-built sites, small static sites and anyone who needs a clean list. To check an existing sitemap, use the sitemap checker.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a limit on the number of URLs?
A single sitemap can hold up to 50,000 URLs (and 50 MB). The generator itself has no limit – it runs in your browser.
Will a sitemap get my pages indexed?
It helps Google find them, but indexing isn't guaranteed. Pages also need to be useful, reachable through links and not blocked.
