Which meta tags actually matter for SEO?


  • Title – the clickable headline in Google and one of the strongest signals of what the page is about.
  • Meta description – doesn't affect rankings directly, but it's your advert in the results and affects how many people click.
  • Canonical – tells search engines which address is the main version when the same page can be reached in several ways.
  • Robots – lets you keep a page out of search with noindex. max-image-preview:large allows big image previews in Google Discover.
  • Viewport – needed for the page to display properly on phones, which is how Google indexes it.
  • Open Graph – controls the title, text and image shown when someone shares the page on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp or X.


Which meta tags can I ignore?


The keywords meta tag has been ignored by Google since 2009, so this generator leaves it out. Tags such as revisit-after, rating and author have no effect on Google rankings either.


How do I add meta tags to my website?


Paste the generated code between <head> and </head> in your page's HTML. On WordPress, use an SEO plugin's title and description boxes instead of pasting code; on Wix, Squarespace and Shopify, look for "SEO settings" on each page. Then run a free SEO check to confirm Google can see them.
