How long should a title tag be?
Google shows roughly 580 pixels of a title on desktop – about 50 to 60 characters, but wide letters such as W and M use more space than i or l. Titles that run over are cut with an ellipsis, and Google sometimes rewrites titles it considers too long or unhelpful.
How long should a meta description be?
Around 990 pixels on desktop, or roughly 150 to 160 characters. Google often writes its own snippet from your page text when your description doesn't match the search, so write a description that genuinely summarises the page.
Tips for better titles
- Put the main search phrase near the start.
- Make every title on your site unique.
- Add your town for local services, e.g. "Plumber in Blackpool".
- Avoid repeating the same word and stuffing keywords.
To check the titles on every page of your site at once, run a website audit.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Google rewrite my title?
Google may replace a title that's too long, stuffed with keywords, repeated across pages or doesn't match the page – often using your H1 instead. A clear, unique title that describes the page is usually left alone.
Does the title tag still matter for SEO?
Yes. It's one of the strongest on-page signals of what a page is about, and it's the headline people see before deciding whether to click.
