Competitor SEO analysis for small businesses

Your search competitors aren't always the businesses you'd expect. Before copying anyone, find out who actually ranks for your searches, then work out exactly what they do that you don't.

Who are my real search competitors?

Search for the five or six phrases that matter most to you – your main service plus your town, for example – in a private browser window. Note who appears in the map results and in the first page of normal results. The names that keep turning up are your search competitors. Directories and national sites will be there too; focus on businesses like yours that you could realistically overtake.

How do I compare their pages with mine?

Put your page side by side with a competitor's in the free SEO comparison tool. It compares titles, headings, content, speed, structured data and more, and shows the topics their page covers that yours doesn't. Look for:

  • Questions they answer that you don't – prices, process, areas, guarantees.
  • Clearer titles and headings that match the search wording.
  • Proof you lack: reviews on the page, case studies, accreditations, photos of real work.
  • Separate pages for services you lump together on one page.

Where do their links come from?

Run their site through the backlink checker and compare it with yours. Websites that link to two or three of your competitors but not to you – trade bodies, local directories, suppliers, sponsors – are the easiest links to win. The domain authority checker shows roughly how strong each site is overall.

How do their Google Business Profiles compare?

For local searches, compare categories, number and recency of reviews, photos, opening hours and posts. If a competitor has 150 reviews to your 12, that's often the biggest gap. See how to get more Google reviews.

What should I do with what I find?

  1. List each gap with how much effort it takes to close.
  2. Fix quick wins first: titles, missing questions, missing service pages, your Business Profile.
  3. Then work on the slower ones: reviews and links.
  4. Re-check every few months – competitors change too.

Never copy their text: it won't rank and it breaks copyright. Use what you learn to make your own page more useful than theirs. See how to rank higher on Google for the full process.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see how much traffic a competitor gets?

Not exactly – only they can see their real figures. Paid tools estimate it. For most small businesses, comparing pages, reviews and links tells you more.

How often should I check competitors?

A quick look every few months is enough, plus whenever a new competitor appears above you.

What if a big national company outranks me?

Focus on searches they can't serve as well: your town, your specialist services, and questions only a local expert can answer.
