What the domain authority checker shows
Authority score
A score from 0 to 100 for each website. The more central a site is in the web's link map, the higher it scores.
Linking websites
How many different websites link to it, each counted once.
Global rank
Its position among every website Common Crawl has mapped – over 100 million – where #1 is the most central.
Check up to 100 websites at once, sort them by authority and download the results as a CSV. Click any website to open its backlinks.
How is authority worked out?
From Common Crawl's public map of which websites link to which, refreshed every quarter. Common Crawl ranks every website by harmonic centrality: roughly, how few link-hops it takes to reach the site from everywhere else on the web. A link from a well-connected site therefore counts for far more than dozens from sites nobody links to, which makes the score hard to inflate with junk links.
XKey turns that rank into a score: the most central website on the web scores 100, and the score falls evenly each time the rank gets ten times longer, down to 0 for the least connected site. As a rough guide, national brands and newspapers score 70 and above, established businesses 40–60, and a local business with a handful of genuine links 20–40.
Is this the same as Moz Domain Authority or Ahrefs Domain Rating?
No. Domain Authority is Moz's own metric and Domain Rating is Ahrefs', each calculated from their own crawls. XKey's authority score measures the same idea – how strong a website's links are – from public data, so it will usually put sites in the same order, but the numbers won't match theirs. Compare sites with one tool, not across tools.
How to use domain authority
- Size up competitors. If the sites ranking above you all score 30 points higher, you'll need more and better links, not just better pages.
- Vet link opportunities. Paste a list of directories, suppliers or local sites and start with the strongest. Never buy links – Google treats paid links as spam.
- Track your progress. Check again each quarter when the data updates. Authority moves slowly; a few genuine links from respected local sites make a real difference.
Authority is about the whole website. Whether a page ranks also depends on its content and how well it answers the search – run the free SEO check on the page itself, and see who links to your competitors with the backlink checker.
What it can't tell you
- Brand-new links. The data is refreshed quarterly, so links from the last few months won't count yet.
- Every link on the web. Common Crawl visits billions of pages but not all of them, so small sites may score a little lower than they should.
- Individual pages. Scores are for whole websites. Subdomains count as their main site, so blog.example.com is scored as example.com.
- Rankings or traffic. A high score helps, but it doesn't guarantee a page ranks or gets visitors.
Frequently asked questions
Is the domain authority checker free?
Yes. No sign-up, no email and no subscription. You can check up to 100 websites at a time, with only a fair-use limit to stop bots.
What is a good domain authority score?
It depends on who you compete with. Compare your score with the sites that rank above you for your main searches: if you're within about ten points, better pages and local signals can close the gap. For most local businesses, 20–40 is normal.
How can I increase my domain authority?
Earn links from websites that are themselves well linked: suppliers and manufacturers listing stockists, trade bodies, local news, clubs and charities you support, and genuinely useful guides people want to share. Links from low-quality directories barely move the score.
Why does a website score 0?
No links to it were found in the data. That's common for new or very small sites, because Common Crawl doesn't visit every page on the web.
How often is it updated?
Every three months, when Common Crawl publishes its next web graph. The months the data covers are shown under every result.
