Does my website need a privacy policy?
Almost certainly. UK GDPR requires you to tell people how you use their personal information when you collect it. A contact form, an enquiry email address, a newsletter sign-up, online orders, bookings and analytics cookies all collect personal information. The policy needs to say who you are, what you collect and why, your legal basis, who you share it with, how long you keep it, people's rights, and how to complain to the ICO. This generator covers each of those.
Do I need to register with the ICO?
Most businesses that handle personal information electronically must pay the ICO's data protection fee, which starts at £52 a year for small organisations (less with the direct debit discount). A few are exempt – the ICO's online self-assessment tells you in a couple of minutes. If you're registered, add your number above.
Do I need a cookie banner?
Under the UK's PECR rules you must get consent before setting cookies that aren't essential – which includes Google Analytics and advertising pixels. If your site only uses essential cookies, you don't need a banner, just a mention in your policy. If you do need one, it must let people reject as easily as accept, and the non-essential cookies mustn't load until they agree. The website technology checker shows which tracking tools and cookie banners your site has.
Where should I put my privacy policy?
- On its own page, linked from the footer of every page – usually at
/privacyor/privacy-policy. - Next to every form that collects personal information ("We'll use your details to reply to you – see our privacy policy").
- In your newsletter sign-up and in the footer of your emails.
Does a privacy policy help SEO?
Not directly as a ranking factor, but a clear privacy page, contact details and an about page are signs of a trustworthy business – part of what Google calls E-E-A-T. Google also requires a privacy policy before you can run Google Ads or use some of its products.
This generator produces a good starting point for a typical small business, not legal advice. If you handle sensitive information (health, children's data, criminal records) or share data in unusual ways, have it checked by a solicitor or see the ICO's guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Is the privacy policy generator really free?
Yes. No sign-up, no email and no watermark, and nothing you type is sent to us – the policy is written in your browser.
Can I edit the policy?
Yes, and you should: read it through, adjust the retention periods to what you actually do, and add anything specific to your business.
Is a privacy policy the same as terms and conditions?
No. A privacy policy is about personal information and is required by law. Terms and conditions set the rules for buying from you or using your site.
How often should I update it?
Whenever you add a new way of collecting information – a newsletter, online booking, a new tracking tool – and check it at least once a year.
