What the alt text checker looks for
Missing alt
Images with no alt attribute at all. Screen readers read out the file name instead, and Google gets no words to go on.
Linked images
Logos and buttons that are links but have no alt text, so the link has no anchor text for Google or screen reader users.
Weak alt text
Alt text that is a file name (IMG_0423.jpg), says "image of", repeats on many images, or runs on far too long.
Why alt text matters
Alt text is the short description of an image in the page's code. It's read aloud by screen readers for blind and partially sighted visitors, shown when an image fails to load, and used by Google to understand the picture. Good alt text helps your images appear in Google Images and gives the page more relevant words. For an image that is a link, such as your logo, the alt text is the link's anchor text. Under the Equality Act, UK businesses are expected to make their websites usable for disabled people, and missing alt text is one of the most common failures.
How to write good alt text
- Describe what matters in the picture, in a short sentence: "Engineer fitting a combi boiler in a Blackpool kitchen".
- Skip "image of" or "picture of". Screen readers already say it's an image.
- Keep it under about 125 characters. Some screen readers cut longer text.
- Don't stuff keywords. Mention your service or town only when it's honestly in the picture.
- Use an empty alt (alt="") for purely decorative images, such as dividers and background shapes, so screen readers skip them. An image that is a link should never be empty.
How to fix the problems it finds
In WordPress, open the Media Library, click the image and fill in "Alternative Text"; images already placed on a page may need it set in the block too. Wix, Squarespace and Shopify have an alt text box in each image's settings. Then check the page's links with our broken link checker.
What it can't check
We read the HTML as it arrives, so images added later by JavaScript or set as CSS backgrounds aren't listed. We can tell you an alt text is missing or weak, but only a person can judge whether it describes the picture well.
Frequently asked questions
Is the alt text checker free?
Yes. No sign-up, no email and no subscription, with only a fair-use limit to stop bots.
Is alt text a ranking factor?
It helps Google understand images and ranks them in Google Images, and for linked images it acts as anchor text. It's a small signal for the page itself, but an easy one to get right.
Should every image have alt text?
Every image needs an alt attribute. Images that carry meaning need a description; purely decorative ones should have an empty alt='' so screen readers skip them.
What's the difference between alt text and a title attribute?
Alt text describes the image for screen readers and search engines. The title attribute only shows as a tooltip on hover and is mostly ignored.
