Which meta tags matter for SEO?
- Title tag. The single most important on-page tag: it's the clickable headline in Google. Put your main service and town first and keep it under about 580 pixels (roughly 55 to 60 characters).
- Meta description. Doesn't change rankings, but it's your advert in the results. A clear benefit and a reason to click win more visitors than a ranking one place higher.
- Robots. A stray "noindex" left on from building the site is one of the most common reasons a page never appears in Google.
- Viewport. Without it, phones show a tiny desktop page, and Google ranks pages by how they work on phones.
- Canonical. Tells Google which address is the main one when the same page can be reached several ways.
Meta tags Google ignores
The meta keywords tag has been ignored by Google since 2009, and a meta tag named "title" does nothing: only the real <title> tag counts. Neither does harm, but meta keywords hands your target words to competitors, so many sites remove it.
How to change your meta tags
On WordPress, install Yoast SEO or Rank Math and edit the title and description in the box under each page. Wix, Squarespace and Shopify have an "SEO" or "Search engine listing" section in each page's settings. Draft them first with our meta tag generator or title tag checker, then run this check again on the live page.
What it can't check
We read the HTML as it arrives. Tags added later by JavaScript may not show here. Google also rewrites some titles and descriptions to match a search, so the preview is a close guide rather than a promise.

Is the meta tag checker free?
Yes. No sign-up, no email and no subscription, with only a fair-use limit to stop bots.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for 120 to 155 characters. Google measures in pixels, cutting desktop snippets at about 990 pixels, so the checker shows the exact width.
Why does Google show a different title from mine?
Google rewrites titles that are too long, stuffed with keywords or don't match the page. A clear, accurate title under 580 pixels is usually kept.
Is this different from the title tag checker?
