What are UTM tags?
UTM tags are extra bits at the end of a link, such as ?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social. They don't change the page people see, but Google Analytics reads them and files the visit under that source, medium and campaign. Without them, a click from your newsletter or a WhatsApp group often shows up as "direct", and you can't tell what worked.
Which fields should I fill in?
- Source – the site or list the link sits on: facebook, instagram, newsletter, google.
- Medium – the kind of link: social, email, cpc (paid ads), qr, print. GA4 groups visits into channels from this, so stick to common values.
- Campaign – your name for the push: spring-sale, boiler-offer-2026.
- Term and content – optional. Term is for paid keywords; content tells two links in the same email or post apart.
Rules that keep your reports clean
- Use lower case every time. Analytics treats Facebook and facebook as two different sources.
- Never add UTM tags to links between your own pages. They start a new visit and wipe out where the person really came from.
- Google Ads tags its own links automatically. Only add UTMs there if you've turned auto-tagging off.
- Keep a simple list of the names you use, so the whole team tags links the same way.

Frequently asked questions
Is the UTM builder free?
Yes, and unlimited. It runs entirely in your browser, with no sign-up and nothing sent to us.
Do UTM tags affect SEO?
Not if you only use them on links from other places, such as social posts and emails. Don't use them on internal links, and keep a canonical tag on your pages so Google indexes the clean address.
Where do I see UTM results?
In Google Analytics 4, under Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition. Switch the dimension to Session source / medium or Session campaign.
Can I shorten a UTM link?
Yes. Any link shortener keeps the tags; the full address opens behind the short one.
