What is DMARC?
DMARC is a TXT record at _dmarc.yourbusiness.co.uk that tells receiving servers what to do with email claiming to be from you that fails SPF and DKIM: deliver it anyway (p=none), send it to spam (p=quarantine) or refuse it (p=reject). It also asks them to send you reports, so you can see every server sending email in your name.
Why it matters now
Since February 2024, Gmail and Yahoo require a DMARC record from anyone sending large amounts of email, and Microsoft followed in 2025. Without one, phishing email using your domain can reach your customers, and your own messages are more likely to be filtered.
From p=none to p=reject, safely
- Start with p=none and a rua= address. Nothing is blocked; you just get daily reports.
- Read the reports for a few weeks. Make sure every service that sends for you (your mailbox, website forms, invoicing, newsletters) passes SPF or DKIM. Fix them with the SPF checker and DKIM checker.
- Move to p=quarantine, optionally with pct=25 to start with a quarter of failing email.
- Finish at p=reject once nothing legitimate is failing.
What the checker looks at
We find the record (on the parent domain too, for subdomains), check there is exactly one, that the policy is valid, what it means for subdomains and whether reports are sent anywhere. Every tag is explained in plain English. We read the published record only; we can't see the reports, which go to the address in rua=.
Frequently asked questions
Is the DMARC checker free?
Yes. No sign-up, no email and no subscription, with only a fair-use limit to stop bots.
Is p=none bad?
It's the right place to start, but it protects nothing: fake email is still delivered. Treat it as a step towards quarantine and reject.
Where do I add a DMARC record?
In your DNS, as a TXT record with the name _dmarc and a value starting v=DMARC1; – at the company that runs your DNS, which may not be your email provider.
Does DMARC need SPF and DKIM?
Yes. DMARC passes when SPF or DKIM passes for your own domain, so set both up first, then add DMARC.
