301 redirect map generator

Moving to a new website or changing page addresses? Paste each old address next to its new one and copy ready-made 301 redirect rules for your server – so you keep your Google rankings.

Why do redirects matter when a site changes?

Google ranks addresses, not pages. When a page's address changes and the old one shows "not found", the rankings and links it built up are lost, and visitors from old links, bookmarks and Google hit a dead end. A 301 redirect tells browsers and search engines the page has moved for good, and passes almost all of its ranking value to the new address. Redesigns without redirects are one of the most common reasons small business sites drop in Google – see redesigning without losing rankings.

How to build your redirect map

  1. List every old address. Export your old sitemap (yoursite.co.uk/sitemap.xml), your pages from Google Search Console (Pages and Performance reports) and any addresses with backlinks (backlink checker).
  2. Match each one to the closest new page in a spreadsheet: old in column A, new in column B. Send pages that no longer exist to the most relevant section, not all to the home page.
  3. Paste both columns above and choose your server.
  4. Add the rules before you switch the new site on, then test a handful with the redirect checker – it shows every hop.

Which option should I choose?

  • Apache (.htaccess) – most UK shared hosting (cPanel, Plesk) and many WordPress hosts. Paste the rules near the top of the .htaccess file in your site's root folder.
  • Nginx – VPS and some managed hosts. Ask your host to add the lines to your server block if you can't.
  • Cloudflare bulk redirects – if your domain uses Cloudflare. Upload the CSV as a bulk redirect list, then turn it on with a bulk redirect rule.
  • Netlify and Vercel – add the file to your project.
  • WordPress Redirection plugin – import the CSV under Tools → Redirection → Import/Export.

Wix, Squarespace and Shopify have their own redirect screens (Wix: SEO → URL redirect manager; Squarespace: Settings → Developer tools → URL mappings; Shopify: Online Store → Navigation → URL redirects), and some accept a CSV import.

Avoid redirect chains and loops

The generator warns you if an address redirects to itself, or if an old address is also used as a new one – which creates a chain (A → B → C). Every hop slows the page down, and Google may stop following long chains. Point every old address straight to its final page.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I keep 301 redirects?

As long as possible – at least a year, and ideally for good. Old links and bookmarks keep arriving for years, and removing redirects throws that value away.

301 or 302?

Use 301 for permanent moves. A 302 tells Google the move is temporary, so it keeps the old address in its index.

Can I redirect everything to my home page?

Don't. Google treats mass redirects to the home page like 'not found', and visitors land somewhere unhelpful. Redirect each page to its closest match.

Is anything I paste sent to XKey?

No. The rules are made in your browser.
