Why do some free QR codes stop working?
Many "free" QR code sites make a dynamic code: it points to their own short link, which then forwards to your page. After a trial they switch the redirect off unless you pay, and every printed flyer and van sign stops working. XKey makes static codes – your web address is stored in the code itself – so there's nothing to switch off.
Which error correction level should I choose?
- Low – the smallest, simplest code. Fine on a screen.
- Medium – the usual choice for websites and emails.
- High or Highest – for print, signs and vehicles. The code still scans if part of it is dirty, scratched or covered by a logo.
Tips for QR codes that scan first time
- Print it at least 2 cm wide, and bigger for posters read from a distance (about a tenth of the reading distance).
- Keep strong contrast: dark code on a light background. Light-on-dark codes don't scan on some phones.
- Leave the white border (the "quiet zone") around the code.
- Use a short web address – shorter addresses make simpler codes that scan faster.
- Test it with two different phones before you print hundreds.
Track who scans your QR code – without paying
Add UTM tags to your link with the free UTM builder before making the code. Google Analytics then shows visits from the code separately – for example "flyer" or "van" – with no paid tracking service.

Do these QR codes expire?
No. The web address is stored in the code itself, with no redirect through us, so it works for as long as your page does.
Is it free for business use?
Yes – for flyers, menus, packaging, vans and anything else. No sign-up, no watermark, no limits.
PNG or SVG?
PNG is fine for documents and social posts. SVG scales to any size without blurring, so give your printer the SVG for signs and vehicles.
Is my link sent to XKey?
No. The code is made in your browser; nothing you type is sent to us.
