Which case should I use?

  • Sentence case – only the first word and names have capitals. Easiest to read; Google's own style and most UK websites use it for headings.
  • Title Case – main words capitalised, small words like "and", "of" and "the" left lower case. Common for page titles and book-style headings.
  • Capitalise Each Word – every word starts with a capital, small words included.
  • UPPER CASE – use sparingly. Whole sentences in capitals read as shouting and are harder to scan.
  • camelCase, snake_case and kebab-case – for code, file names and URLs. kebab-case is the format for page addresses; try the URL slug generator for those.

Does letter case matter for SEO?

Not for rankings: Google ignores case when it matches searches. It matters for clicks. A title in sentence or title case looks tidier in search results than one in capitals, and Google sometimes rewrites shouty titles. Check how yours will look with the title tag checker. Case does matter in page addresses: /Contact and /contact can be two different pages, so keep URLs in lower case.

How the title case works

Every word is capitalised except short joining words (a, an, and, as, at, but, by, for, in, of, on, or, the, to, up, via, with) unless they start or end the line. Sentence case also capitalises the word "I" and the first word after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Names in the middle of a sentence aren't known to us, so check those by eye.

Is the case converter free?

Yes, and unlimited. It runs in your browser, with no sign-up and nothing sent to us.

Can I undo a conversion?

Press Ctrl+Z (Cmd+Z on a Mac) in the text box. Converting to lower case and back can't restore capitals on names, so keep a copy of the original.

Does it work with other languages?

Yes for upper, lower and sentence case in any language with capital letters. The small-word list for title case is English.

Is there a limit on text length?

No fixed limit. Very long documents work, though your browser may slow down past a few hundred thousand words.
