Favicon generator

Make every favicon file a website needs, from a letter or two or from your logo, and copy the few lines of HTML that tell browsers and Google where to find them.

Paste this into your page's <head>

What you get

favicon.ico

One file holding 16, 32 and 48 pixel icons: the browser tab, bookmarks, and the 48 px minimum Google asks for in search results.

Phone icons

A 180 px Apple touch icon for iPhones and iPads, and 192 and 512 px icons for Android home screens, with a site.webmanifest that lists them.

The HTML

The link tags to paste into your page's head, plus a sharp SVG icon when you make it from letters.

Why your favicon matters for search

Google shows your favicon next to your site name in mobile and desktop results. A clear, recognisable icon makes your listing stand out among the plain ones and tells people they've found the business they were looking for, so more of them click. A missing favicon shows as a grey globe, which looks unfinished. Google only shows a favicon that's square, at least 48 × 48 pixels and on a stable address, and it picks it up the next time it crawls your home page.

How to add your favicon

  1. Download the files and upload them to the top folder of your website, so favicon.ico lives at yoursite.co.uk/favicon.ico.
  2. Paste the HTML into the <head> of every page (usually the theme's header file or a "header code" setting).
  3. On WordPress, you can instead go to Appearance → Customise → Site Identity → Site Icon and upload the 512 px PNG. Shopify, Wix and Squarespace each have a favicon box in their settings.
  4. Check it worked by opening your site in a new tab. Browsers cache favicons hard, so try a private window if you still see the old one.

Tips for a good favicon

  • Keep it simple. At 16 pixels, a full logo turns into a smudge. One or two letters, or a single shape from your logo, read far better.
  • Use strong contrast between the background and the letters, and check it on both light and dark browser themes.
  • Start from a square image at least 512 × 512. We crop wider images to the middle.
  • Match your brand, so people recognise you in a row of tabs or search results.

Privacy

Everything happens in your browser: your logo is never uploaded to us. That's also why it's unlimited.

Frequently asked questions

Is the favicon generator free?

Yes. No sign-up, no email, no watermark and no limit, because the icons are made in your browser.

What size should a favicon be?

Use favicon.ico with 16, 32 and 48 px icons inside, a 180 × 180 Apple touch icon and 192 and 512 px PNGs. Google needs at least 48 × 48 and a square shape.

Why isn't my favicon showing in Google?

Google picks it up when it next crawls your home page, which can take days or weeks. It must be square, at least 48 px, linked from the home page and not blocked by robots.txt.

Do I still need favicon.ico?

It's still the safest choice: some browsers and tools request /favicon.ico directly, even without a link tag.
