Big photos are the most common reason small business websites are slow. Drop in your images, pick a size and download smaller versions – your files never leave your computer.

Why compress images for your website?

A photo straight from a phone is often 3–6 MB and 4,000 pixels wide. A web page only needs about 1,920 pixels for a full-width picture, and a good WebP at that size is usually 150–400 KB. Smaller images make pages load faster, which helps your Core Web Vitals, keeps mobile visitors from giving up, and uses less of your hosting allowance.

What size should website images be?

  • Full-width banners: 1,920 px wide (2,400 if you want extra sharpness on big screens).
  • Images in the page text: 1,200 px wide is plenty.
  • Thumbnails, team photos and logos: 800 px or less.
  • Aim for under 200 KB for most images and under 500 KB for big banners.

Is WebP better than JPG?

For websites, usually yes: WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPGs of the same quality, and every modern browser shows them. WordPress, Shopify, Wix and Squarespace all accept WebP uploads. Keep a JPG copy if you also need to send the photo by email or print it.

What quality setting should I use?

80% is a good starting point for photos – most people can't tell it from the original. Try 70% for big background images. If the result looks soft or blocky, go up to 85–90%. Logos and screenshots with sharp text are best kept as PNG ("Same format as the original").

How do I know which images are slowing my site down?

Run the free SEO check: its speed section lists oversized images on the page. The website audit finds them across your whole site. Don't forget image SEO too – descriptive file names and alt text help your pictures show up in Google Images.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser using its built-in image tools, so your photos never leave your device. It even works offline once the page has loaded.

Is there a limit?

Up to 30 images at a time, as many times as you like. Very large images (over about 50 megapixels) may be slow on older phones.

Why is my PNG bigger after compressing?

Some PNGs, such as logos and diagrams, are already very efficient. If the new file is bigger, we keep your original and say so. Try WebP instead.

Does it keep photo location data?

No. Re-saving the image removes EXIF data such as GPS location and camera details, which is good for privacy.
