Ecommerce SEO for small online shops

Small online shops can't outspend Amazon, but they can out-specialise it. Ecommerce SEO is about making category and product pages that answer exactly what shoppers search for, and keeping the shop's structure clean so Google can crawl it.

Which pages should an online shop try to rank?

  • Category pages usually win the most valuable searches – "women's walking boots", "oak dining tables" – because shoppers want to compare options. Give each one a clear title, a short helpful introduction and a buying guide or FAQs below the products.
  • Product pages catch specific searches: brand, model, size or colour. See product page SEO for writing them.
  • Guides and comparisons catch shoppers earlier – "how to choose a mattress" – and link through to the right category.

How do I structure an online shop for SEO?

Keep every product within three or four clicks of the home page: home → category → sub-category → product. Use breadcrumbs, link related categories to each other and avoid putting one product in a dozen categories that each create a new address. See internal linking.

Do filters and sorting cause duplicate content?

They can. Filters for size, colour, price and sort order can create thousands of near-identical addresses. Point each filtered page's canonical tag to the main category, keep filter links out of your sitemap and only create indexable pages for filters people genuinely search for, such as "black leather sofas". Read more in duplicate content.

What should I do with out-of-stock products?

  • Temporarily out of stock: keep the page live, show when it's back and offer alternatives.
  • Gone for good, with a close replacement: redirect (301) the page to the replacement or the category. Check with the redirect checker.
  • Gone for good, nothing similar: let it return 404 or 410 and remove it from internal links.

Which technical checks matter most for shops?

  • Product schema with price, availability and reviews, so Google can show rich results. See schema markup.
  • Fast pages on mobile, especially with lots of product photos. See Core Web Vitals and image SEO.
  • No basket, checkout or account pages in Google's index.
  • Unique titles on every category and product. Run the website crawler to find duplicates and missing details across the whole shop.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use the manufacturer's product descriptions?

Write your own for the products that matter most. Hundreds of shops use the same supplier text, so Google has little reason to rank yours over theirs.

Is Shopify good for SEO?

Shopify covers the technical basics well. See our Shopify SEO guide for the settings worth checking.

Should I list products on Google Shopping?

Yes. Free product listings in Google Merchant Center can show your products in the Shopping tab without paying for ads.
