Product page SEO for small online shops
Every product page is a chance to be found by someone ready to buy. Most small shops waste it with a copied description and a photo. A few changes make each page something Google wants to show and a shopper wants to click.

Why don't my product pages rank?
Usually for one of three reasons: the description is the same as on every other shop selling that item, the page has almost no text Google can read, or the shop's category pages are empty so there's nothing tying the products together. Big retailers win when every shop says the same thing; you win when your page says something theirs doesn't.
How should I write a product description?
- Write your own, even a short paragraph. Say who it's for, what problem it solves and why you stock it.
- Answer the questions buyers ask: sizes and fit, materials, dimensions, what's in the box, care, compatibility, delivery times.
- Use the words people search, including model numbers and plain descriptions ("waterproof walking boots for wide feet", not just the brand's product name).
- Add your own photos – in use, in scale, close-ups – with descriptive alt text. See image SEO.
What is product markup, and do I need it?
Product structured data tells Google the price, currency, stock level, rating and shipping details in a form it can read reliably. It can show those details right in the results and makes your products eligible for Google's free shopping listings. Most shop platforms add it automatically; check a product page with the free SEO check, and if it's missing, read the schema markup guide. Also set up Google Merchant Center – listing products there is free.
How should I handle colours and sizes?
Normally keep one page per product with the options chosen on the page, so reviews and links build up in one place. Give a variant its own page only when people search for it specifically and it genuinely differs – a different model, not just a different size. If the platform creates separate addresses for each option, make sure the canonical tag points to the main product.
What should I do with sold-out or discontinued products?
- Out of stock but coming back: keep the page live, show it as out of stock (the markup should say so), and offer a back-in-stock alert or alternatives.
- Gone for good, with a close replacement: 301 redirect to the replacement.
- Gone for good, nothing similar: redirect to the closest category, or let the page return a not-found error. Don't leave hundreds of dead products live.
Why do category pages matter so much?
People often search for a type of product – "men's merino jumpers", "oak dining tables" – rather than one item, and category (collection) pages are the ones that rank for those searches. Give each one a short, useful introduction, a clear heading, filters that don't create thousands of indexable addresses, and links to related categories and buying guides. Check for duplicates with the website audit, and read duplicate content if filters create many copies.
Do reviews help product pages rank?
Genuine product reviews add fresh, original text in your customers' words and can show star ratings in search results. Ask buyers a week or two after delivery, and show every review, not just the good ones. Never write or buy reviews – it's illegal in the UK.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a product description be?
Long enough to answer what a buyer needs to know. For simple items that might be a short paragraph and a list of details; for expensive or technical products, much more.
Can I use the manufacturer's description?
You can use the technical specs, but add your own description and photos. Copied text is on hundreds of other shops, so it gives Google no reason to choose you.
Should I add a blog to my shop?
Buying guides and how-to articles that answer real questions and link to your products and categories can bring visitors who aren't ready to buy yet, and they earn links more easily than product pages.
