How long does SEO take to work?
SEO takes longer than most small firms hope and less time than many agencies suggest. Fixes to a site Google already trusts can show within weeks; ranking a brand-new site in a busy market can take a year. Here are realistic timescales and what speeds things up.

What can change within a few weeks?
- Technical fixes on pages Google already knows about, such as a page accidentally set to noindex or blocked in robots.txt. Once fixed, they can return as soon as Google recrawls them.
- Better titles and descriptions can lift clicks quickly, because the page is already ranking and more people choose it.
- Google Business Profile updates, new photos and fresh reviews often show in the map results within days or weeks.
What takes a few months?
New service pages, improved content and new links usually take three to six months to settle into steady rankings. Google has to find the page, test it against other results and build trust in it. Positions often jump around in the first weeks; that's normal, so judge progress month by month.
Why do some sites take a year or more?
- Brand-new domains have no history or links, so they start from zero. See SEO for new websites.
- Busy markets – national searches, or cities with dozens of strong competitors – need more content and more links to break through.
- Big problems to unwind, such as duplicate pages, a messy redesign or spammy links bought in the past.
How can I speed SEO up?
- Fix the basics first: run a free SEO check and clear anything marked critical.
- Target realistic searches – local and specific ("boiler repair Lytham") before broad ones ("plumber"). Check them with the keyword difficulty checker.
- Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and request indexing of new pages.
- Earn a few genuine local links and reviews. See how to get backlinks.
- Keep going. SEO compounds: pages that rank keep bringing visitors without paying per click.
How do I know if SEO is working?
Look for more pages appearing in Search Console, more impressions, then more clicks and enquiries. Rankings for your main searches are the last thing to move. Compare each month with the same month last year to allow for busy and quiet seasons.
Frequently asked questions
Can anyone guarantee first place on Google?
No. Nobody controls Google's results, and Google itself warns against companies that promise guaranteed rankings.
Is SEO worth it if it takes months?
For most small businesses, yes. Ads stop the day you stop paying; a page that ranks keeps bringing visitors for years. Many businesses use ads while SEO builds up – see SEO vs Google Ads.
Why did my rankings drop after a change?
Rankings often wobble for a week or two after changes while Google re-assesses pages. If they stay down, check the change didn't remove content, break links or alter page addresses without redirects.
