YouTube SEO for small businesses
YouTube is the world's second-biggest search engine, and Google often shows videos in its own results for how-to and product searches. A few useful videos can bring customers to a small business for years, if people can find them. Here is how to get your videos found.

What videos should a small business make?
- Answers to questions customers ask: "how to bleed a radiator", "how to measure for blinds", "what happens at a first driving lesson".
- Product demonstrations and comparisons for things you sell.
- Behind-the-scenes and before-and-after videos of real jobs.
- A short introduction to you and your premises for your home page.
Check what people search with the keyword generator or by typing into YouTube's own search box and noting the suggestions.
How do I optimise a YouTube video?
- Title: say what the video shows in the words people search, under about 70 characters.
- Description: two or three sentences summarising the video, a link to the relevant page on your website, and your business name and area.
- Chapters: add timestamps (0:00 Intro, 1:15 Tools you need…) so YouTube and Google can link to sections.
- Captions: check and correct the automatic captions; they help viewers and make the words searchable.
- Thumbnail: a clear custom image with a few large words.
- Playlists that group related videos.
Can YouTube videos rank in Google?
Yes. Google shows videos for many "how to" and product searches, and can jump to the right moment using chapters. Videos also appear in Google's Videos tab and sometimes in AI Overviews.
Should I put videos on my website?
Yes – embed each video on the most relevant page with a short written summary. It keeps visitors on the page longer and gives Google more to understand. Use lazy loading or a lightweight embed so videos don't slow your page; see Core Web Vitals. VideoObject structured data helps Google show your video – see schema markup.
How long should business videos be?
As long as it takes to answer the question well. Two to eight minutes suits most how-to videos; short clips of under a minute work as YouTube Shorts and on social media.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need expensive equipment for YouTube?
No. A recent phone, good light and a cheap clip-on microphone are enough. Clear sound matters more than picture quality.
Does YouTube help my website's SEO?
Links from YouTube descriptions don't pass much ranking value, but videos bring visitors, build trust and can rank in Google themselves.
How often should I post videos?
Consistency beats volume. One genuinely useful video a month is a good start for a small business.
