Does social media help SEO?

Likes and shares aren't a direct Google ranking factor, but social media can still help your SEO indirectly – and sometimes your social profiles rank in their own right. Here's what really makes a difference for a small business.

Are likes and shares a Google ranking factor?

No. Google has said for years that it doesn't use social signals such as likes, followers or shares as a direct ranking factor, and links from social posts are usually nofollow. Posting more on Facebook won't by itself move your website up Google.

How can social media help SEO indirectly?

  • More people find your content, and some of them – bloggers, journalists, local organisations – link to it from their websites. Those links do help. See how to get backlinks.
  • More branded searches: people who see you on Instagram later search your name on Google.
  • Reviews and recommendations in local groups lead to Google reviews.
  • AI search: AI tools look at what's said about a business across the web, including some public social content. See AI search optimisation.

Do social profiles show up in Google?

Yes. Searches for your business name often show your Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn or TikTok profiles alongside your website, filling more of the results page with you. Use your exact business name, add your website link and keep your details identical to your Google Business Profile. Adding your profiles to your site's Organization or LocalBusiness markup (sameAs) helps Google connect them – see schema markup.

How do I make shared links look good?

When someone shares a page, social networks build a preview from your Open Graph tags: title, description and image. Check how your pages look with the Open Graph checker and create tags with the Open Graph generator.

Should a small business spend time on social media or SEO?

For most local businesses, the basics of SEO – a strong website and Business Profile – bring more steady enquiries for the time spent, because they reach people already searching. Use social media where your customers spend time, to show your work and stay remembered, and link back to your website.

Frequently asked questions

Which social network is best for SEO?

None directly helps rankings. Pick the network your customers use; YouTube is the exception, as its videos can rank in Google.

Do social media links count as backlinks?

Technically they're links, but most are nofollow and pass little or no ranking value.

Can TikTok or Instagram replace a website?

Not reliably. You don't control those platforms, and many customers still search Google before buying.
