What the SSL checker tests
Trusted certificate
We connect over https like a browser. If the certificate is missing, expired or for the wrong name, the connection fails and we tell you.
Expiry and issuer
Who issued the certificate, the date it runs out and the names it covers, with a warning three weeks before expiry.
Redirects and HSTS
Whether http:// sends people to https://, and whether HSTS tells browsers to always use https.
Mixed content
Images, scripts and stylesheets on the page still loaded over http://, which browsers block or flag as "Not secure".
Does SSL affect SEO?
Yes, in two ways. Google has used https as a ranking signal since 2014, and Chrome labels any page without it "Not secure", which puts visitors off. An expired certificate is worse: browsers show a full-page warning and almost everyone leaves. Most hosts now give free certificates from Let's Encrypt that renew automatically, so the usual problems are a renewal that silently failed, a missing redirect from http, or old http:// image links.
How to fix common SSL problems
- Expired or about to expire: renew in your hosting control panel, and check automatic renewal is switched on.
- Wrong name: the certificate must cover both yourbusiness.co.uk and www.yourbusiness.co.uk. Ask your host to add the missing name.
- No redirect: add a 301 redirect from http:// to https:// (most hosts have a "force https" switch), then test it with the redirect checker.
- Mixed content: change each http:// address in your pages to https://. On WordPress, a search-and-replace plugin fixes old links in one go.
What it can't tell you
Workers can't read the certificate a server hands over, so the issuer and dates come from the public Certificate Transparency logs, which record every certificate browsers will trust. A site with several certificates may be using a different one from the newest we show. We check the home page for mixed content, not every page.

Is the SSL checker free?
Yes. No sign-up, no email and no subscription, with only a fair-use limit to stop bots.
What's the difference between SSL and TLS?
TLS is the modern version of SSL. Everyone still says SSL certificate, but every secure site today uses TLS.
How long does an SSL certificate last?
Free Let's Encrypt certificates last 90 days and renew automatically. Paid ones last up to a year, and browsers are moving to shorter lifetimes.
Do I need to pay for an SSL certificate?
Not for a normal business website. A free certificate gives exactly the same padlock and encryption as a paid one.
