What a WHOIS lookup shows
- Registrar – the company the domain is registered through, and the people to contact about it.
- Registered, updated and expiry dates – how old the domain is and when it must be renewed.
- Name servers – which DNS service runs the domain, which often tells you the web host.
- Status codes – whether the domain is locked against transfer, on hold or about to be deleted.
- DNSSEC – whether the domain's DNS is signed against tampering.

WHOIS and RDAP
WHOIS is the old text service registries have used since the 1980s. RDAP is its replacement: the same records in a standard format, and since 2025 the official source for .com and every other generic ending. XKey asks each registry over RDAP where it has it, and falls back to WHOIS for endings that don't (we show the registry's raw WHOIS text when that happens).
What the status codes mean
- client transfer prohibited – locked so it can't be moved to another registrar without unlocking first. Normal and good.
- client hold or server hold – the domain isn't working, often because of an unpaid renewal or a dispute.
- redemption period or pending delete – the domain has expired. The owner can still get it back for a short time before it's released.
- active or ok – registered with no restrictions.
Why can't I see the owner's name?
Since GDPR in 2018, registries and registrars hide the personal details of domain owners. To reach the owner, contact the registrar shown, or use any contact details on the website itself.
Frequently asked questions
Is this WHOIS lookup free?
Yes. No sign-up, no email and no subscription, with only a fair-use limit to stop bots.
How do I check if a domain is available?
Look it up. If the registry has no record of it, we'll tell you it isn't registered, so you can buy it from any registrar.
Why is some information missing?
Registries publish different amounts. Some don't show registration dates, and personal details are hidden everywhere for privacy.
How do I change my domain's WHOIS details?
Through the registrar you bought it from – they pass changes on to the registry. For .uk domains you can also contact Nominet.
