Why check what a website is built with?
- Researching competitors. See which platform, booking system and review widget a successful rival uses, and whether they advertise on Google, Facebook or TikTok.
- Choosing a platform. Find a site you like and check whether it's WordPress, Shopify or a builder such as Wix before you commit to the same.
- Taking over a website. New to a business, or a web designer picking up a client? Find out what the site runs on before you get the logins.
- Checking your own site. Spot leftovers such as old Universal Analytics code that no longer records anything, or tracking tags with no cookie banner.
Does the platform affect SEO?
Any of the big platforms can rank well. What matters more is how the site is set up: unique titles and descriptions, fast pages, clean addresses and helpful content. How it works, and what it can't see
We load the page once, as a normal browser would, and look for the fingerprints each technology leaves: file paths, script addresses, generator tags, response headers and cookies. We also read the domain's public DNS records for its email provider, DNS host and the services it has verified. We don't guess. If something leaves no trace, it isn't listed, so:
- Server-side software that hides itself (most databases, and the language behind many sites) can't be seen.
- Tools loaded only after you accept cookies, or only on other pages such as checkout, may not show. Check those pages too.
- Sites behind bot protection may only reveal their hosting and DNS.
Frequently asked questions
Is the website technology checker free?
Yes. No sign-up, no email and no subscription, with only a fair-use limit to stop bots.
Can it tell which WordPress theme a site uses?
Usually. It reads the theme folder name from the page's code, and shows the parent and child theme if there are both. Some security plugins rename or hide it.
How do I tell if a site is Shopify, Wix or Squarespace?
Enter its address above. Each builder loads files from its own servers (cdn.shopify.com, static.wixstatic.com, static1.squarespace.com), so the checker can tell them apart even on a custom domain.
Why is a tool I know a site uses not listed?
It may load only after cookie consent, only on some pages, or be one we don't recognise yet. We only list what we can actually see on the page you entered.
